The Evolution of Ships and the Top Ten Biggest Ships in the World
For centuries, humans have constructed boats and ships, with historical evidence suggesting that the Vikings reached America by sea long before the Spanish explorers. The Knock Nevis, also known as the Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, and Jahre Viking at various points in its history, was a marvel of maritime engineering and held the title of the largest ship ever built. Originating from Norway, this ultra-large crude carrier (ULCC) stretched an astonishing 458 meters in length, equivalent to more than four football fields placed end to end. Its immense size made it a floating behemoth, capable of carrying up to 564,763 tonnes of crude oil across vast oceanic expanses. The Knock Nevis was so massive that it was unable to navigate through the English Channel, the Suez Canal, or the Panama Canal, limiting its operational routes to open seas. Despite its impressive capabilities, the ship faced numerous challenges throughout its lifetime, including damage during the Iran-Iraq War and multiple changes in ownership. The vessel's sheer scale presented unique operational difficulties, requiring specialized port facilities and extended stopping distances of up to 5.5 miles. Eventually, after decades of service, the Knock Nevis was decommissioned in 2009 and scrapped in India, marking the end of an era for this legendary supertanker that had captured the imagination of maritime enthusiasts worldwide.
